There are Five V-Dem Indices namely:
1. Deliberative — The deliberative principle of democracy focuses on the process by which decisions are reached in a polity. A deliberative process is one in which public reasoning focused on the common good motivates political decisions

2. Egalitarian — The egalitarian principle of democracy holds that material and immaterial inequalities inhibit the exercise of formal rights and liberties, and diminish the ability of citizens from all social groups to participate.

3. Electoral — The electoral principle of democracy seeks to embody the core value of making rulers responsive to citizens, achieved through electoral competition for the electorate’s approval under circumstances when suffrage is extensive; political and civil society organizations can operate freely; elections are clean and not marred by fraud or systematic irregularities; and elections affect the composition of the chief executive of the country.

4. Liberal — The liberal principle of democracy emphasizes the importance of protecting individual and minority rights against the tyranny of the state and the tyranny of the majority.

5. Participatory — The participatory principle of democracy emphasizes active participation by citizens in all political processes, electoral and non-electoral. It is motivated by uneasiness about a bedrock practice of electoral democracy: delegating authority to representatives.

Summary of Findings:

  • Thailand has the lowest recorded deliberative component index meaning that they have the least focus on the public good when making political decisions
  • Singapore continues to have the highest egalitarian democracy index among the three meaning that all groups in said country enjoy equal access of power
  • Among the three countries, Philippines is at the top when it comes to Electoral Democracy index. Implicating that Philippines, makes sure that there is no fraud or systematic irregularities when choosing its leaders.
  • Philippines remained at the top when it comes to Liberal democracy however, the recent years has shown that Singapore has topped over the Philippines. This means that the Philippines has taken less care of how there might be tyranny in play.
  • Philippines again on top when it comes to participatory democracy, this shows that most of the country’s citizens participate in all of the political processes that are done. This includes electoral and non-electoral practices.
